Monthly Planning Guide for PTA Leaders

Hello PTA Leaders! Welcome to your 2017-2018 term. We created this SRVCPTA Monthly Planning Guide for PTA Leaders to help you when planning out your year. The guide includes important meeting dates, PTA deadlines, and program committee events. The unit President or Executive Vice President (EVP) must attend the monthly PTA Council meetings, so please mark these Presidents Meeting dates on your calendar. In the rare instance that neither President nor EVP can attend, please appoint another executive board member from your school to attend in your place. If you have any PTA questions, please contact Lynn Ashley, SRVCPTA President [president@srvcouncilpta.org].

CA State PTA Professional Governance Standards

The bylaws and standing rules for each PTA provide a framework for the organization. In order to operate effectively using this framework, PTA executive boards and individual board members will benefit from adherence to professional standards of governance.

Professional governance standards specify principles involved in governing responsibly and effectively and were developed to support PTA boards in their efforts to enhance their membership’s and the community’s understanding about the responsibilities of the PTA board.

Ways For Parents to Learn More About Participating in Decision-Making

Well-informed and engaged parents help to ensure that every student has an opportunity to enjoy overall success in school and beyond. There are several ways parents can collaborate with school staff and district leadership as partners in school governance and decision-making, including:

> Attending PTA meetings and sharing your parent view on school-related issues with educators. Contact your school PTA President about the agenda process and parliamentary procedure for having a dialogue

> Serving on your PTA boards, school site councils, education fund boards, and school district committees

> Keeping other parents informed about specific issues and laws that affect their children’s schools as a PTA legislative committee member

> Providing a parent’s perspective by taking part in committees who interview and hire school staff

> Working with other school and community leaders on programs, policies and practices that support student achievement

> Attending LCAP meetings, school board meetings, and special board of education workshops that are open to the public
